Build an App Without Coding: AI App Builders Compared

AI app builders let you describe software in plain English and get a working web app. They're great for validating ideas, but they are not a full engineering team. Here's how the leading options differ.

The contenders

- Lovable – chat-driven full-stack app builder. Projects can be connected to a code repository so a developer can take over later. - Bolt.new – from StackBlitz. Builds and runs apps in your browser; developers can edit the generated code directly. - Replit – an AI agent builds your app in a cloud environment with hosting included. - v0 – Vercel's builder, especially strong at clean React-based interfaces, with easy deployment to Vercel.

All four offer a free way to start and use credit- or usage-based paid plans. Check current pricing on each site.

Which one should you try first?

| Situation | Try | |---|---| | You want a full product prototype by chatting | Lovable | | You want to see and tweak the code as it's built | Bolt.new | | You want building and hosting in one place | Replit | | You care most about polished UI | v0 |

The honest answer: spend one hour building the same small app (for example, a booking form with an admin list) in two of them, and keep the one that felt better.

What they still struggle with

1. Security. Don't assume generated login, database rules or payment code is safe. Have someone technical review it before real users arrive. 2. Cost creep. Every iteration consumes credits. Plan your app on paper first. 3. Edge cases. The first 80% comes fast; the last 20% takes many prompts.

When to graduate to a coding tool

Once your app has real users, a developer using Cursor, GitHub Copilot or Windsurf can maintain the code more reliably than prompting an app builder forever.

Websites, not apps?

If you just need a marketing site, use Framer or Durable instead; they're simpler and cheaper for that job.
